About this service
Sicily has one of the richest literary traditions of any region in Italy. Pirandello, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Verga, Sciascia, Camilleri, Bufalino. These names have shaped how the world reads Italian fiction, and the tradition they represent is still very much alive. We translate in the context of knowing that tradition well, which matters when you are working with Sicilian authors or with texts that reference Sicilian cultural and historical material.
Literary translation has requirements that no other category of translation work has. The translator must understand not only what the original text says but what it does: how the rhythm of a sentence contributes to its meaning, how a particular word choice signals something about a character, how a dialect reference or cultural allusion works for the source-language reader and how to find the equivalent effect in the target language when a direct equivalent does not exist.
Our literary translators are writers as well as linguists. They understand the craft of writing in the target language, not just the rules. For Italian to English, we work with translators who have published their own creative writing in English, because the ability to write well in the target language is not separable from the ability to translate literary work into it.
Services cover novels and novellas, short story collections, poetry collections, theatrical texts and screenplays, narrative non-fiction and memoir, literary essays and criticism, and children's and young adult literature. We also work with publishers on target-market positioning for translated works.
